GC Composition Alumnus Wins NEA Grant for New Opera “The Summer King”

The Graduate Center Music Program is pleased to share the recent success of Composition Program alumnus Daniel Sonenberg, who was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of the concert premiere of his opera The Summer King, which will take place this coming May in Portland, Maine. The opera is based on the life of Negro Leagues baseball legend Josh Gibson, and the NEA grant provides a critical contribution to the funds needed to bring the work to Portland’s Merrill Auditorium stage. Details related to the upcoming premiere of the work can be found in the Portland Press Herald, where Sonenberg and the NEA grant for the opera was featured. Additionally, the opera will be featured in several events at the Opera America New Works Forum, which is taking place tomorrow, Jan. 15th, here in New York City.
