Samuel R. Thomas, Ph.D Candidate in Ethnomusicology at the Graduate Center, is the Artistic Director of the New York Andalus Ensemble. The New York Andalus Ensemble performs music based upon the historical traditions stemming from medieval Iberia and the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia). The New York Andalus Ensemble is a diverse and multilingual group, with vocalists and instrumentalists. The repertoire of the ensemble combines irreverent songs of love with songs of deep spirituality, in Arabic, Hebrew, and Spanish.
The New York Andalus Ensemble is co-sponsored by the Music Department and the Foundation for Iberian Music, the Institute for Sephardic Studies and, ASEFA.
