Wayne Weng, a D.M.A. student, is an accomplished pianist currently studying with Ursula Oppens. In early March, his performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra won the seventh Iowa Piano Competition in a contest with two other gifted musicians, who also played works by Beethoven. The Sioux City Journal’s music critic Bruce Miller wrote that Weng’s sound was “superior on all counts” and that his “technical skill coupled with his great ear easily gave him an edge.”

Weng has performed in Canada, the United States, Western Europe, Serbia, Egypt, and Hong Kong, as a recitalist as well as a collaborative pianist. He has been featured as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Seattle, and the Avanti Orchestra. He has also been heard on radio stations such as WQXR New York, CBC Radio, and Seattle King FM; is a winner of many other piano competitions and grants; has participated in numerous music festivals, including at Ecoles d’Art Americaines in Fontainebleau, where he was awarded the Piano Prix; and has served as an adjudicator at the Festival on the Lake in Vancouver and the International Chopin Youth Competition in Houston. Weng holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Mannes College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Yale University.
