Congratulations to ethnomusicology alumnus David Garcia, who was appointed Robin March Hanes Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill effective July 1, 2024. His research focuses on the music of the Americas with an emphasis on black music and Latin music of the United States and a theoretical focus on race and racism. His 2017 monograph, Listening for Africa: Freedom, Modernity, and the Logic of Black Music’s African Origins (Duke University Press) won the Bruno Nettl Award from the Society for Ethnomusicology.
