Congratulations to Ph.D. student Madison Schindele (musicology), who has been named one of three CUNY Graduate Center doctoral students awarded Fulbright research fellowships for the 2025- 2026 academic year! She has been selected alongside Ph.D. students Wesley Doucette (French) and Cortney Berg (Art History) from the GC as recipients of the prestigious award, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Schindele’s dissertation explores how infertility is represented in Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s 1919 opera Die Frau ohne Schatten. Her research combines close analysis of the opera’s dramaturgy and musical language with the history of discourse about fertility in the early 20th century. As a visiting scholar at the Freie Universität Berlin, she will examine historical and contemporary productions of the opera and the sociopolitical narratives they reflect.
