Congratulations to Rebecca Moranis (Ph.D. candidate in Music Theory) won has been featured in the Graduate Center news! Rebecca has been featured for her research on Joni Mitchell’s vocal evolution reflecting beyond the singer’s age and lifestyle, and the research has gone on to win two awards for her presentation “An Analysis of Joni Mitchell’s Vocal Evolution.”
Rebecca has won the Patricia Carpenter Emerging Scholar Award from the Music Theory Society of New York State for the best student paper delivered at its annual meeting, as well as the Student Presentation Award from the Society for Music Theory (SMT), a leading international organization for music theory scholars.
Her article “Joni Mitchell’s Vocal Evolution” is forthcoming in Theory and Practice 51 (2026).
