On Wednesday, April 7th at 1:00pm EST, cellist Kirsten Jermé will perform three solo cello suites spanning three centuries in a livestream recital from Elebash Hall. Blending elements of dance, theater, poeticism, lyricism and brilliance, these suites demonstrate the evolution of the genre as well as its indebtedness to J.S. Bach – the progenitor of the solo suite for cello – while exploring the full compass of the instrument and the expressive potential of its solo voice. The program includes Benjamin Britten’s First Suite for Cello, Op. 72 (1964), J.S. Bach’s Suite No.6 in D major (c.1720s), and Lera Auerbach’s La Suite dels Ocells: Hommage à Pablo Casals (2015), based on themes from Casals’ arrangement of the Catalonian carol El Cant dels Ocells (“The Song of the Birds”), and honoring his legacy of rediscovering the six cello suites of J.S. Bach.
