About:

Moving from academia to the professional world requires knowledge and planning. This three workshop series is open to students from all disciplines, and will help you to develop the knowledge base and skills necessary for finding your first job (outside the academy) after your graduate degree. Though these workshops are meant to be taken together, you can join us for as many as fit your schedule.

Week One: What Else Can I Do? Finding your Professional Fit

Thursday, March 24th, 2016 4:00 p.m.

What career options exist beyond academia? What’s the best way to explore career paths? How do you find a position that can help you build your career? This workshop introduces the employment landscape and how you might find your fit therein. We’ll talk about what other PhD and MA students have gone on to do, and whether making similar choices would be right for you. We’ll also discuss how career assessments and experiences like internships can help in your decision making. Finally, we’ll review places to find open positions. If you’re looking to industry or elsewhere beyond these hallowed halls, this workshop is the place to start. Week Two: Tailoring Professional Materials to Job Ads

Thursday, March 31st, 2016 4:00 p.m.

You’ve found a job that excites you, one you really want to apply for. Now what? This workshop guides you through the close-reading of the job advertisements and through the production of professional materials—resumes, cover letters, and a basic LinkedIn profile—that respond directly to the type of jobs you’re interested in. At the end of this hands-on, nuts-and-bolts session, tailoring job search materials to specific opportunities will become easier and less stressful. As a result, you’ll be able to send in application materials more quickly when you find jobs that interest you.  More info and to register: https://careerplan.commons.gc.cuny.edu/events/alt-ac-boot-camp-2/

Week Three: Building a Network & Presenting Yourself Professionally

Thursday, April 7th, 2016 4:00 p.m.

You’ve found a compelling job advertisement and have written a strong resume. What more do you need? People! Networking helps to ensure that your job materials land on the right desk, improves your chances of getting interviews, and opens you up to new opportunities and experiences. Building upon the job analysis exercise from week two, this workshop discusses strategies for cultivating a network and presenting yourself professionally. Practicing the skills introduced in this workshop can propel you from submitting the application to interviewing for the job.
